ED Mouthguards™ was established in 2012. This Stellenbosch based dental laboratory offers mouthguards that are multi layered & individually designed + made professionally on the dentist, orthodontist, prosthodontist and/or maxillofacial & oral surgeon's instructions. ED Mouthguards™  are 2,3,4 times better(fit, thickness, comfortness, multi layered, etc.) than those stock standard- and boil & bite mouthguards one can buy at sports stores, as well as those one layered vacuum mouthguards dentists' manufacture.  For each Dr Eikestad Dental gives a poster + brochure with general information about ED mouthguards for patients' to read.  With all ED mouthguards leaving Eikestad Dental patients receive a ED mouthguard Info pamphlet to inform them what and what not to do with their mouthguards.

ED Mouthguards™ aim to provide anyone, both young and old, who play contact sports such as rugby, hockey, karate, MMA(Mixed Martial Arts), extreme cage fighting, boxing, baseball, and etc. with top quality custom fitted pressure multi laminated layered mouthguards, our mouthguards have no impact on speech and breathing of patients.  However, even those participating in noncontact sports (for example, gymnastics) and any recreational activity (for example, skateboarding, mountain biking, motorcross, bmx etc.) that might pose a risk of injury to the mouth will benefit from wearing a protective mouthguard.  At Eikestad Dental we only use the latest+best material that are recently available to manufacture our ED Mouthguards™.

Why use a mouthguard when playing sports?

Accidents can happen during any physical activity; the advantage of using a mouthguard during sports is that it can help limit the risk of mouth-related injuries to your lips, tongue and soft tissues of your mouth.  Mouthguards also minimise or avoid chipped or broken teeth, nerve damage to a tooth/teeth, or even tooth loss, which will result in lower medical bills.  There are also tertiary benefits including confidence boosting and some guards that can improve athletic performance.

Can I wear a ED Mouthguard if I wear braces or have an fixed retainer?

Yes.  Since an injury to the face could damage the braces or fixed retainer, a properly fitted mouthguard are particularly important for people who wear braces, fixed retainers or have fixed crown/ bridge/implant work.  Your dentist, orthodontist, prosthodontist or maxillofacial & oral surgeon can determine the mouthguard that will provide the best protection for your unique mouth work. Always remember not to wear any orthodontic retainers or other removable appliance during any contact sports or during any recreational activities that put your mouth at risk or injury.

Maintenance of mouthguard

Treat your mouthguard in the same manner as the teeth in your own mouth.  Use a toothbrush to clean your mouthguard for functioning better & longer.  Always make sure to fully rinse mouthguard with water after each use.

ED Mouthguards™ offers custom fitted mouth protectors.  Patients can choose from a wide variety of colours that includes transparant, yellow, orange, black, green, blue, red, white, pink, maroon and etc.   ED Mouthguards™  can also provide mouthguards with split colours, tie-dye and rainbow colours, include logo's(school, club, province etc.), glitter, stars and personal detail depending on the patient's needs.  We use a Drufosmart scan(pressure thermoforming unit) machine to fabricate our mouthguards.

All ED Mouthguards™ are standard with ED logo & patient's name, surname and/or nickname or tel no / cell no.

ED Mouthguards™ also offers a mouthguard with sponge protection, forward rugby players, kickboxers, hockey players and etc. normally benefit from this custom option. Recent medical research have shown that the sponge(cushion) on the anterior teeth, as well as molars, cause separation in the temporal mandibular joint( between the jaw and the skull), which can reduce the risk/degree of concussion from impacts to to the jaw.

ED Mouthguards™ also manufacture mouthguards which consist of a lower & upper mouthguard that is fused together by using their unique method.  These mouthguards are most of the time manufactured for mixed martial arts, as well as extreme cage fighting, as the head is an intentional target for fists, shins, elbows and knees.  Anteriorly these mouthguards have an opening for easy breathing. The normal ED layered mouthguard is also a lot for extreme cage fighting or MMA.

Each ED Mouthguard comes in a retainer box with logo.

Sports-ralated oral injury costs:

The lifetime dental rehabilitation costs can approach several thousand rand per tooth for anyone that looses a tooth in a sporting injury.  This doesn’t include the associated costs of hours in the dental practice and the possible development of secondary problems, such as periodontal disease. ED Mouthguards™ are 20 times less expensive than the total cost of rehabilitation costs for a single knocked-out tooth.  See figure 1 for an example of the cost estimate of a mouthguard versus the cost estimate to replace a single tooth.
